After being treated for years to media descriptions of Israel’s security fence as an eyesore, imagine my surprise to discover, while riding along the Jerusalem highway, that it is gorgeous. Those sections cordoning Jerusalem off from some of the nearby Arab villages are of modest height, comprised of beautiful sand- and rose-colored bricks. The bricks are artistically arranged in a design that blends with the sandy, sunlit surroundings. People in the U.S. would pay top dollar for this kind of environmentally sensitive landscaping.

Heather Robinson is an independent journalist who specializes in writing about the Middle East, profiling offbeat characters and humanitarians (not always mutually exclusive), and helping readers happily navigate life. A committed vegetarian, she aspires to live close to the land one day, but for now enjoys living in the heart of New York City, where her reporting has included everything from a rundown of NYC’s most noteworthy dating services to the best outlets to do some good as a volunteer. In her spare time she enjoys reading, film, jogging, yoga, and imitating people.

It’s strange how the fence, a simple measure that has saved lives on all sides-
seems to only get condemned by the media!
