Will Lindsey Graham and Jeb Bush Put The Donald in his Place?

by Heather Robinson

Today brings the news that former Florida Governor Jeb Bush has finally taken a swing back at Donald Trump for the various insults Trump has thrown his way, including referring to him as “low energy.” Bush shot back this week with a political ad attacking Trump for his alleged “Manhattan” mindset, including footage of the billionaire describing himself as “very” pro-choice, being chummy with Hillary Clinton,  and touting the virtues of a single payer healthcare system.

This ad arrives about a week after South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham’s CNN interview calling Trump a “complete idiot” and adding, “He is shallow, he is ill-prepared to be commander-in-chief, he doesn’t know what he is talking about in terms of how our laws work, he says the worst things possible about immigrants and women, and he’s a complete idiot when it comes to Mideast policy … So I think over time, common sense will prevail.” Graham added that, should Trump wish to come down to South Carolina, he would “beat his brains out.”

While I’m sure that last statement wasn’t meant literally, it was refreshing to hear someone stand up to The Donald, especially concerning the billionaire candidate’s treatment of women. Call me old fashioned, but I’ve found it striking and disappointing that until now, while there have been a few (too few!) objections on the part of prominent women, including Carly Fiorina, to Donald Trump’s misogynistic attacks, none of the male candidates has had the old fashioned decency to call Trump out on it.

It would appear that, when it comes to respect for women, Lindsey Graham is the only real man in the pack. Feminists have long complained about chivalry, but consider Donald Trump’s nasty, brutish attacks (Calling women “Fat pig!” and insinuating that a female journalist is menstruating because she asks him tough questions). As a New York City woman, I’ll take Graham the Southern gentleman over a New York City bombast who demeans and insults women any day of the week.

More to come.
