The Founding Fathers Would Have Been Proud of Tea Party Demonstrators

This opinion piece, which ran in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review today, discusses the significance of the tax day tea parties as a healthy expression of the right to petition government for redress of grievances. As the piece explains, that right, along with the rights of free speech and assembly are “vital characteristics of a functioning democracy.”

Much media coverage of the tea parties focused inordinately on sensationalistic elements and not on the grassroots spirit and civic-mindedness that characterized the gatherings in most places, including Western Pennsylvania.
