Rudy Giuliani Makes Strong Showing in Tonight’s Florida Republican Debate

Maybe I’m thinking with my heart, but I believe the polls will get it at least somewhat wrong in Florida. Especially after Rudy Giuliani’s strong showing in tonight’s Republican debate in Boca Raton.

A few highlights: When Tim Russert asked about the economy, Rudy made the point that he’s the only candidate who has truly turned an economy around. Was it my imagination or did Romney and Huckabee look a little scared as Rudy made that incontrovertible statement?

Asked about his opposition to placing caps on greenhouse gas emissions, he skillfully explained that restricting U.S. industry will only hurt our economy while nations like China and India continue to produce the emissions at full tilt. Instead, he favors promoting incentives for the development and use of more healthy technologies like hybrid vehicles, and clean coal.

Rudy hit an especially strong note in responding to Tim Russert’s question about The New York Times’ disparaging of him as a mayor. The Times editorial board recently spouted some nonsense attacking Rudy’s character and claiming that their perspective represents New Yorkers, and that the rest of the country doesn’t know Giuliani like New Yorkers do. How dare those elitist hypocrites claim to speak for us New Yorkers? Most New Yorkers love Rudy Giuliani, and all but the ingrates and criminals at least respect him.

Well, to quote from Fred Siegel’s “The Prince of the City,” a history of Giuliani’s mayoralty: “Giuliani’s respect for The Times wasn’t enhanced when, according to some of those present, at a meeting with the editorial board the paper argued for more cops for Times Square, the site of their office, and police cuts for most of the rest of the city.”

Doesn’t that about sum it up?

Surely Rudy’s mayoralty is an example of excellent government despite the efforts of media (especially the Times), and bureaucrats to subvert it every step of the way.

I’m writing from Miami now, where I plan to attend Giuliani’s rally in Little Havana tomorrow morning. Let’s hope the voters of Florida demonstrate the same wisdom as most New Yorkers when, despite the best efforts of “media” to undermine him, they elected – and re-elected – Rudy Giuliani.
